Kevin McCarthy struggles to move Republicans past Trump

“What members of the House want is someone that’s going to take the bullet for them, not make them take the bullet,” said GOP strategist Terry Sullivan. He said Mr. McCarthy is “trying to have it both ways when it comes to the role Donald Trump plays in the future of the party.”... The challenges facing Mr. McCarthy were on display Thursday. He told reporters he wasn’t surprised that nearly three dozen Republicans backed the commission and said he had thought the number would be higher. But Mr. Trump then attacked those lawmakers: “See, 35 wayward Republicans—they just can’t help themselves,” he said in a written statement. “The Democrats stick together, the Republicans don’t.”... “Kevin has made the decision to just put it all in on Trump—might be a good move for 2022,” said Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R., Ill.), a critic of Mr. Trump. “But I’m going to tell you, for the long arc of the history of this party, it’s not going to be good.”
