“She’s a done deal. Gonna happen. They are squandering an opportunity.”

One GOP lawmaker also said some within the conference have taken issue with Stefanik “running for the position before it was even open.” “She’s not a conservative — it’s not her record, and a lot of people feel like we really need a strong conservative right now, and you know that’s the problem,” the source said. “Because she is telling friends and colleagues that she is, I guess going to be more conservative or she’s becoming more conservative because their district is, that’s her argument, but her cumulative lifetime scores on all the cards are just really low, and that’s what gives everybody pause.” Another senior GOP source said some members would like to see a 30-day delay to allow the conference to evaluate their options after the vote to oust Cheney takes place. And while a number of members said that the optics of booting the highest-ranking Republican female member of leadership without replacing Cheney with another woman could be problematic, others said they don’t believe that gender should play a role.
