Harry Reid's filibuster legacy

Democrats compounded that blunder in 2017 by trying to filibuster Justice Neil Gorsuch, who in replacing the late Justice Antonin Scalia didn’t significantly alter the ideological composition of the Court. Mr. McConnell then finished what Mr. Reid started by ending the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees. The Democrats might have kept their filibuster option to exert influence on replacements for Justices Anthony Kennedy or Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Final filibuster scorecard: Democrats jammed through three appellate judges but paved the way for the GOP to confirm three Supreme Court Justices. Thanks, Harry.

Democrats are now promising to eliminate the legislative filibuster if they win Senate control on Nov. 3. They might keep in mind that, once it’s gone, Republicans will need only 51 votes to dismantle whatever Democrats pass.
