De Blasio suggests prostitution policy shift

Sex workers may face less stringent enforcement from NYPD under policy changes that Mayor de Blasio suggested Wednesday are now in the works.

Last year, de Blasio said he was not “comfortable” with legalizing prostitution, and while he did not address that issue specifically Wednesday, any new city policy on sex work could represent a shift away from that perspective.

“To the question of whether sex workers should be arrested, my broad answer is no. The people who are organizing and profiting from that sex work are the people who should be arrested,” he said at his morning press briefing. “Anybody who is exploiting folks who do sex work, those are the people we should be arresting. So we’ll continue to look at the NYPD’s protocols, but I think we have to really go after the true criminals here.”
