Scarborough’s tweet was incredibly hypocritical. If giving a platform to Trump is being complicit with white supremacy, Scarborough himself is a white supremacist. In fact, by Scarborough’s standards, based on the amount of air coverage MSNBC gave to Trump in the 2016 race, the entire network is complicit with white supremacy.

During the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, “Morning Joe” itself hosted Trump multiple times to discuss his viewpoints. A study on 2016 election coverage found CNN and MSNBC gave Trump three times as much coverage as Fox News did. Many credit his appearances there with helping fuel his early candidacy through “earned media,” or free advertising.

Estimates say mainstream media’s exposure of Trump in 2016 amounted to some $2 billion in in-kind campaign contributions.
