Trump announces tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods

The U.S. will impose a 10 percent duty on $200 billion more of Chinese goods starting Sept. 24 and raise it to 25 percent at the beginning of 2019, President Donald Trump announced today.

Trump said the announcement comes after an investigation found that China “is engaged in numerous unfair policies and practices relating to United States technology and intellectual property.”

The move brings the total amount of Chinese goods that Trump has hit with tariffs to roughly half of the $505 billion that the United States imported from China last year. The latest round hits far more consumer goods than Trump’s previous actions, which retailers warn will inevitably require them to boost prices.
