A survey of more than 2,000 Writers Guild of America West members found that 64% of female writers have experienced sexual harassment sometime in their careers.

The disclosure, first reported by Deadline Hollywood, came in a May 22 letter from the WGA West’s board of directors to its 9,000 members. The missive also said 11% of male writers reported being harassed at some point.

“Many more writers have witnessed harassment,” the board said. “Those of you who shared the story of an incident of harassment have given us a sobering, first-person insight into the conditions that make addressing the issue both essential and urgent.”

The letter also said a “significant amount” of this harassment occurs in writers’ rooms, adding, “While the Guild is not the employer, that does not exclude us from also addressing this as a union.”
