A new poll from Morning Consult-Politico includes a question about whether “universities should allow guest speakers to appear on campus, even if the guest’s words are considered to be hateful or offensive by some.” The results are a little surprising, mostly because they reveal that a large minority of registered voters — 30 percent — supports banning some speakers from campus…
The percentages are higher for women and Democrats. There’s not a lot of variation by age, though as is often the case with cross-tabs, the sample sizes are small. Some other poll questions about public attitudes toward free speech (not necessarily on college campuses) have shown stronger variation by age, with younger Americans more supportive of government restrictions on “offensive” speech.
