Trump: Torture "absolutely" works, but I’ll defer to Mattis, Pompeo

President Trump reaffirmed his position on enhanced interrogation techniques on Wednesday, though he said he would hear what his intelligence advisers had to say before bringing them back into practice.

After talking with ABC’s David Muir about his ideas for the border wall, Trump was asked about his previous statements about how the government should use waterboarding and similar methods in the war against ISIS.

“As far as I’m concerned, we have to fight fire with fire,” Trump said. “With that being said, I’m going with General [James] Mattis. I’m going with my secretary because I think [Mike] Pompeo’s gonna be phenomenal. I’m gonna go with what they say.”

Mattis and Pompeo are Trump’s Secretary of Defense and CIA Director respectively. Both have made statements in the past which suggest that they are not as in favor of waterboarding as Trump is.
