The offensive against the Islamic State militants, also known as ISIL or ISIS, began at 4 a.m., local time, according to The Guardian.
The city is one of the last major Islamic State strongholds in Iraq, along with the country’s second-largest city, Mosul. It was also the first city to fall to the militants when they swept across northern and western Iraq in early 2014.
