Cable news: Helpful and dying

Cable news rules! That would appear to be the lesson of the chart above, from a just-released Pew Research Center look at how Americans are getting their news about the ongoing presidential election. Turns out cable news is drubbing other sectors: 24 percent of those who’d learned about the election cited the 24-7 outlets as their most helpful source, besting social media’s 14 percent rating. Let’s not even discuss where newspapers land in the rankings.

So does this mean that cable news is going gangbusters? For an answer to that question, we need look no further than another Pew chart, from last April.
