House "masters" at Harvard agree to change title because it reminds students of slavery

The masters of Harvard’s 12 undergraduate residential Houses have unanimously “expressed a desire” to change their title—which some students have criticized as associated with slavery—Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana said on Tuesday.

College and House administrators will soon meet to select a new name to replace the “House master” title, according to Khurana, who informed the Faculty of this decision at its monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Michael D. Smith has approved the change and University President Drew G. Faust is also in support of it, according to College spokesperson Rachael Dane.

Khurana, himself a master of Cabot House, said he will share the new title with the College early next year.
