John Kasich is calling out Donald Trump and Ben Carson, and, on occasion, Jeb Bush. But so far, he’s laid off Marco Rubio. And so far, Rubio is reciprocating.
It may not be intentional, and it may not last forever. But the truce of sorts between the two presidential candidates evokes the sentiment of Republican donors, operatives and random people at countless campaign rallies: Wouldn’t a Rubio/Kasich ticket — or a Kasich/Rubio alliance, for that matter — make for a formidable 2016 team?
Ohio and Florida. Experience and youth. No-nonsense pragmatism and hopeful eloquence. Mainstream GOP credentials and Latino heritage. The two candidates boast strengths to balance each other’s weaknesses and could stake the GOP’s claim to arguably the two most important swing states.
To be sure, neither Kasich nor Rubio wants to be vice president right now. They’re both running for president, period.
