Hey, Planned Parenthood did nothing wrong

But the videos are far less scandalous than they’ve been made out to be. As the clips make clear, Planned Parenthood obtains consent from patients, transfers tissues at cost, and works with organizations concerned with advancing human health and research—exactly the type of research that pro-life Republican legislators overwhelmingly supported. In contrast, the companies that actually seek to get rich from the sale of human (including fetal) body parts frequently follow no such guidelines.

In truth, this fight might not be about fetal tissue at all. According to Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president of Planned Parenthood, these senators “don’t care about fetal-tissue research; It is just an angle to go after safe, legal abortion.” The voting records of prominent Republicans back her up.

Furthermore, Planned Parenthood is a very small player in the human tissue trade. To get an idea of the industry’s scale, consider that there are more than 1.5 million human-tissue related surgeries in the United States each year—surgeries that include everything from cornea transplants to skin grafts—dwarfing the 22,000 annual organ donation surgeries. Human tissue and bone are also crucial to cosmetics, dentistry, plastic surgery, pharmaceuticals, allograft surgeries for joints and many other businesses.
