Taliban confirm Omar's 2013 death, choose new leader

The Taliban’s supreme council held a meeting in Afghanistan on Wednesday and unanimously decided that Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor will serve as the Taliban’s new leader, according to sources at Geo News, a CNN affiliate. The Taliban acknowledged Thursday that longtime leader Mullah Mohammed Omar had died more than two years ago.

Former Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar is indeed dead, the Afghan Islamist militant group confirmed Thursday.

The acknowledgment, made in a statement released by Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, came a day after Afghanistan’s government announced the reclusive Islamic cleric had died in 2013.
