White House not ruling out a presidential trip to Cuba

“I certainly wouldn’t rule out a presidential visit,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday. “But I don’t have anything to announce at this point.”

In an interview with ABC News, Obama said he doesn’t have “any current plans to visit Cuba” and said would “see how things evolve.”

When asked if Obama really had the desire to travel to a nation which has punished dissidents and restricted political activity, Earnest pointed to other trips the president has recently made.

“It is not unprecedented for us to go places and interact with countries with whom we have a very fundamental difference of opinion about that country’s treatment of their citizens,” Earnest said, pointing to presidential stops last month in Beijing and Burma.
