Mitt Romney took a hard line against illegal immigration in 2012, got creamed by Obama among Hispanic voters and lost the election. That, combined with the fact Hispanics are the nation’s fastest-growing demographic group has many Republicans convinced that they have to embrace some form of amnesty as a matter of self-preservation.
The thinking goes that if Republicans just back off their position on immigration, they will start winning large numbers of Latino voters. Some even cite perceived Hispanic traits – good work ethic, religiosity, close families – in arguing that Latinos are natural Republican voters.
It’s self-delusion.
The theory hinges on the belief that Hispanics are natural Republican voters except for the party’s stand on immigration. More likely, Hispanics vote for Democrats because virtually every minority group votes Democrat.
