In recent speeches, Mrs. Clinton has been trying to soften her image. She talks repeatedly about “the glow” she feels at becoming a first-time grandmother. Chelsea Clinton‘s daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky, was born last month.
Over the summer, Mrs. Clinton came out with a book, “Hard Choices,” that offers gauzy accounts of her parents babysitting Chelsea, and long walks with her husband “to clear our minds.”
Not many people are buying it – literally. The book was heavily promoted after it came out in June yet has sold just 246,000 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan, which covers 85% of the print book market in the U.S. That’s about 50,000 fewer copies than a far less publicized book published a month earlier by Ben Carson, a conservative who has been mentioned as a possible Republican presidential candidate.
Family will be a major theme in a Clinton presidential bid. She is advancing policy ideas aimed at fortifying families who are struggling in a tough economy.
With Ms. Lewinsky back on the scene, voters are inevitably reminded of the drama and stresses in Mrs. Clinton’s own family.
