But the biggest issue the Wolf campaign promotes is its claim that Mr. Roberts has lost touch with the state of Kansas after more than three decades in Washington. Mr. Roberts was elected to the House in 1980 and the Senate in 1996.
Fueling the accusation are Mr. Roberts’s own statements. He told the New York Times his local residence amounts to a recliner in a donor’s home and later said in a radio interview that he visits Kansas “every time I have an opponent.” The Wolf campaign has been running TV ads calling the state a “distant memory” for Mr. Roberts. The incumbent also has been criticized for voting to increase the nation’s debt ceiling.
“There is definitely a hunger for conservatism, and there is absolutely an anti-politician sentiment,” Dr. Wolf said in a recent interview.
