Illegal immigrant steps closer to Fla. law license

Jose Godinez-Samperio confirmed Tuesday the Florida Board of Bar Examiners recommended his admission to the state Supreme Court, which makes the final decision.

The court ruled earlier this year that immigrants in the country illegally cannot get a license to practice law in Florida. That prompted the Legislature to pass a measure allowing issuance of a law license if the immigrant came to the country as a minor and has been in Florida for more than 10 years.

Godinez-Samperio was 9 when he came to the U.S. with his parents, and the family overstayed a tourist visa.
