In heterosexual relationships, women tend to be younger than their partners. So when they start to cohabit or marry, they fly the nest sooner than most men their age. According to the National Survey of Family Growth, the median age at first marriage in the U.S. is 26.6 for women and 28.6 for men. Cohabitation tends to first happen around 21.8 years for women and 23.5 years for men.

There are 1.4 million households in America with single parents age 20 to 24. Only 76,000 of those are single dads. Of all single parents, 37 percent are the sole adults in the household. Although that fraction might be lower for this younger age group, it might help explain why more women than men have moved out.

Pew pitched in with another explanation: “Females tend to finish college faster than males.”
