Sources: DOT to announce mandate on "talking" cars

The Obama administration is expected to propose Monday that all new cars sold in the U.S. be required to have some form of technology enabling them to communicate with each other, according to two sources with knowledge of the announcement.

One source said cars would be required to have dedicated short-range communication radios, which would essentially allow cars to talk to other cars and traffic infrastructure nearby.

The Transportation Department estimates the technology could prevent four out of every five crashes not involving impaired drivers.
