Mr. Gingrich has at times expressed some doubts about the U.S. capacity for nation-building, which has dominated U.S. policy under the last two presidencies. But he said he has now formed his own conclusions about their failures.
“My worry about all this not new,” Mr. Gingrich said. “But my willingness to reach a conclusion is new.”
In a clear sign his thinking has shifted, Mr. Gingrich also said it is time for the GOP to heed some of the anti-interventionist ideas offered by the libertarian Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, another foreign policy skeptic and the tea party-backed conservative.
“I think it would be healthy to go back and war-game what alternative strategies would have been better, and I like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul because they are talking about this,” the former House speaker said.
