"Broad support" within RNC for earlier convention in 2016

According to a key official in the RNC hierarchy, there is a particularly high level of support among committee members for moving the national convention — which has been held in late-August or early September in the last three presidential cycles — to an earlier date.

“The only thing for which I can say I’ve detected broad support is the idea of moving the convention forward to as early as July,” RNC General Counsel John Ryder told RCP. “Other than that, I don’t think people have begun the discussion of the issues on the presidential primary sufficiently to form a consensus.”

A Commission on Conventions Planning, whose members have already been appointed, will meet on the RNC summer meeting’s first day to begin to consider the 2016 convention date.
