Cheney spent time in the state as a child when her father relocated from D.C. to run for Congress. And her family first arrived in the state in 1852, she noted in her campaign launch video. But Cheney relocated her own family from McLean, Va., to the state of 576,000 only last year.
“She will out-raise him by factors of 10 or more, and he will still win because Wyoming is grass-roots, retail campaigning,” said Cynthia Lummis, the state’s sole House member, who backs Enzi. “It’s talking to people face to face. It’s not about who has the best consultants and the shiniest ads and the best pollsters. It’s about everyday retail politics.”…
Cheney’s political brand is hawkish neocon. The veteran of George W. Bush’s State Department has consistently taken a hard line on foreign policy matters when appearing on Fox News.
It’s no surprise that Paul would back Enzi over Cheney — Dick Cheney endorsed his primary opponent in 2010, suggesting Paul would be dangerous for national security. But many Wyoming Republicans are more in line with Paul’s libertarian strand of foreign policy. That’s especially true among the kinds of voters in a primary who might be disposed to back a challenger.
Tea party web sites are often plastered with banners, for example, that say “Stop NSA Spying” or warn against the government use of drones. The Cheneys have defended those very programs.
