Romney runs against Obama, Obama runs against the GOP

As Williams, the Romney spokesman, put it, “Reagan won in 1980 by bringing in Republicans, independents and disillusioned Democrats who were disappointed in Carter over to his side.” This year, he said, “there are a number of independents and Democrats who are fed up with President Obama’s abysmal policies and leadership.”

In other words, it doesn’t behoove Mitt Romney to bash Democrats broadly — he needs them in order to win.

In contrast to Romney’s narrow focus on the president when he’s on the stump, the president has been loath to mention Mitt Romney by name, and when he does, it makes waves…

Democratic strategist Doug Thornell, who has close ties to the Obama campaign, disagreed.

“I think it’s actually smart politics for Obama to keep congressional Republicans as foils because their policies are so unpopular, Congress’s ratings are in the toilet, and — let’s face it — Tea Party House Republicans are the face of Congress right now.” He added, “There’s no space between Romney and House Republicans when it comes to the key issues — he has embraced all of their radical ideas, including the Paul Ryan budget.”
