John Kerry and his wife paid a lower effective tax rate in 2003 than Romney did last year

In the graph above, John Kerry’s 2003 tax return is lumped together with that of his (very wealthy) wife, Teresa Heinz, whose taxes were broken down by The New York Times. On his own, Kerry payed 22.9 percent in federal taxes in 2003 on his much smaller Senate salary (plus a few book royalties and the sale of a 17th-century Dutch painting).
