The striking sight of the former strongman, who lead Egypt for 30 years, arriving on a gurney and being placed behind bars in the Cairo courtroom was carried live on television and transfixed Egypt and much of the Arab world, as my colleague Anthony Shadid reports.

Mr. Mubarak and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, who stood by their father’s side during most of the proceeding in an apparent effort to block cameras from capturing his image, denied all charges against them.
