Finally: David Brooks opens up about the tea party

Question: And what do you think is motivating them to not come to a deal, do you think it is the Tea Party faction?

David Brooks: “I think that’s part of it. You know, I think up to now the strategy of being just a tough negotiator saying ‘We will not give in’ has been pretty effective up until about a week ago. Because Democrats have really come to them and made a series of concessions. Over the past week that’s begun to change. Democrats have begun to recoil and take away some of those concessions. So there comes a moment when you’re a hard ass and then a moment when you should begin to well give a little. Reagan understood that with the Soviets in the 1980s and I think now is the time to give a few concessions to keep things going.”
