Why are peace awards being given to Julian Assange?

Assange, who enraged Washington by publishing thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables was awarded the medal at the Frontline Club, in London.

It is only the fourth time the award has been made in its 14 year history.

But while there is little argument with the credentials of the previous recipients, Assange is likely to prove a more controversial choice.

He has refused to return to Sweden to defend himself over allegations of sexual assault, instead staying at a stately home in Britain.
