To be sure, the current media environment is a mixed blessing. There are good and bad things that have come from the rise of cable news, talk radio, and new media. But I can’t help but think we are better off than we were when the nation was essentially forced to pay attention to three networks and two newspapers — all of which, by the way, sought to cloak their liberal bias under the guise of neutrality.
In a perfect world, of course, truly objective journalism would be preferable. Having said that, the least preferable paradigm is biased journalism cloaked as “objective” journalism. As such, I can’t help but think today’s media environment is, at least, more honest.
Watching Keith Olbermann may not be my cup of tea, but at least we all know where he stands. He’s not a phony.
