Hayworth to McCain: I wish you would have campaigned this hard against Obama

“John, if you had told the truth about Barack Obama the way you’re spreading falsehoods about me, you might be president of the United States right now,” Hayworth said.

The cutting remark was more than just a one-liner — though Hayworth, a former radio talk show host, delivered plenty of those. Instead, it was just the most colorful way Hayworth communicated his increasingly strident campaign message: Republicans can’t trust John McCain.

“You know, Hollywood gave us ‘The Seven-Year Itch.’ But John, you gave us the six-year switch,” zinged Hayworth, a familiar cable news fixture during his time in Congress. He joked to reporters after the debate that while McCain “has on hard shoes, I thought he might have worn flip-flops from the pool.”
