New Obama ad: Few presidents have faced so many challenges

The Obama campaign released a new ad this morning in which we’re treated to an epical presentation of President Obama’s hard-fought achievements — because nothing says “historic” like a classic Morgan Freeman narration.

Every president inherits challenges. Few have faced so many. Four years later, our enemies have been brought to justice. Our heroes are coming home. Assembly lines are humming again. There are still challenges to meet, children to educate, a middle class to rebuild — but the last thing we should do is turn back now.

So… other presidents have faced 9/11, the Cold War, WWII, the Great Depression, WWI, the various other recessions of the 20th century, and etcetera… but we’re to understand that few presidents have faced challenges on par with those “inherited” by The One. Huh. That doesn’t reek of hubris at all.

There’s no question that every era, every generation, every president has their own uniquely difficult challenges — challenges are ever-present, and yes, some may be more consequential than others, but the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries alone have seen plenty of do-or-die moments. The real question is how presidents meet and respond to those challenges. Sure, I’ll grant that President Obama “inherited” a financial crisis, an economic recession, and the War on Terror — but our economy has seen little-to-nothing more than stagnation for almost four years now, and as evidenced by the recent attacks in Benghazi, we still have plenty of enemies on that front. President Obama’s policies have failed to address his challenges. That is all.
