Team Obama's latest attack ad: Mitt Romney v. reality, the global edition

That Mitt Romney, man — that is one out-of-touch dude. He seriously needs a reality check, or something, and Team Obama has made it their mission to give him one with their “keep the GOP honest” crusade.

President Obama has been slowly but surely making the campaign-rounds, especially through clutch battleground states, concentrating his messaging on a handful of issues. Over the past couple of months, we’ve been treated to an energy narrative chock-full of deceptive statistics and grandiose “all of the above” rhetoric, before the president recently turned his attentions to student loan debt in a bid to reestablish his cool factor with the country’s youths (careful there, Mr. President — your desperation is showing). While we all know that the issue of illegal immigration is waiting in the wings somewhere, it appears that foreign policy may be the next major item on the docket. In the latest in their “Mitt Romney v. Reality” ad meme, Team Obama criticizes Mitt Romney’s “Cold War”-approach to foreign policy:

Although President Obama has been occupied with student loans for most of this week, they’re sending out their scout to front the partisan message. Vice President Biden spoke about foreign policy today at New York University and took direct shots at the GOP’s presumptive nominee:

Vice President Joe Biden says Mitt Romney’s foreign policy views are dangerous and “totally out of touch” with the American people and could potentially lead a war-weary nation back “to the past we have worked so hard to move beyond.”

Speaking at New York University, Biden linked the presumptive Republican nominee to the policies of former President George W. Bush, suggesting Romney’s policies get the country back “into the mess President Obama has dug us out of.”

He accused Romney of having a “profound misunderstanding” of how American foreign policy works and said he’s embraced “dangerous and discredited policies” that could put the country in “danger.”

“Americans know that we cannot afford to go back to the future,” Biden said, speaking in a somber voice. “Back to a foreign policy that would have America go it alone, shout to the world ‘You’re either with us or against us,’ lash out first and ask the hard questions later, if at all.”

I’d wager that Mitt Romney would take umbrage with most of Team Obama’s criticisms; for instance, that Russia does not have a real and sinister agenda or that the sanctions on Iran have had much effect in deterring their nuclear program. But if this is indeed the next major leitmotif in the political drama of 2012, get ready to be reminded again and again, just in case you didn’t know already, that you can’t touch President Obama’s foreign policy creds because, hey, Osama bin Laden is dead.
