Last week, Democrats exploded when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers shot and killed a man in Houston. ICE later said that the man had used his car as a weapon against ICE officers, who responded with lethal force against the illegal alien. The hysteria traveled around the political world before ICE's side of the incident got its boots on, to use an old adage, and Democrats are still demanding that ICE be defunded and disbanded over that shooting.
Today, we have another apparent ICE-related shooting, this time in Maine. The shooting has left one person deceased, according to Democrat state legislative leader Ryan Fecteau, but at the moment there are few other details:
One person was killed in a shooting that involved Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Maine on Monday morning, according to the state’s House Speaker Ryan Fecteau.
The shooting happened in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday morning, according to a statement from Fecteau on Facebook.
One person was killed, and “ICE was involved,” Fecteau stated. The shooting was under investigation by Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety as of 8:18 a.m. on Monday, he said. Fecteau said he expected the FBI would also investigate the incident.
“These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me,” Fecteau said.
CNN tried to find out more, but didn't come up with much other than what happened in Houston:
CNN has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
Biddeford police told CNN there was a “police incident” in the area and said there is no threat to the public at this time, but declined to provide additional details.
The incident comes less than a week after a man on his way to work in Houston was shot and killed by an ICE agent. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed during a traffic stop in what ICE initially described as a targeted enforcement operation, though a source later said Salgado Araujo was not the target of the operation.
CNN omits details of the ICE statement, but witnesses are challenging their account as well. Those witnesses are not uninterested bystanders, however:
The federal authorities initially said that ICE agents stopped a vehicle around 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday and tried to arrest Mr. Araujo, whom they described as an “illegal alien.” On Friday, ICE said in a statement that Mr. Araujo had hit an ICE vehicle, had not followed orders and had tried to run over an officer. An ICE agent fired in self-defense, the statement said. Mr. Araujo was shot in the abdomen and taken to a hospital, where he died hours later, according to the Houston Fire Department.
But on Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration agents, said that Mr. Araujo was not the intended target of the operation. Federal officers had been looking for a different man.
At the time of the stop, Mr. Araujo was on his way to work at a construction site. Three men were in the car with him, including Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo, his younger brother. As of Friday, they remained in immigration detention in Conroe, Texas, outside Houston.
On Thursday, the three men told a lawyer, Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, that Mr. Araujo did not use his vehicle as a weapon or try to run over the immigration officers, and that no agent had been positioned in front of the vehicle, the lawyer said.
The authorities did not provide video footage of the encounter. The ICE agents were in unmarked vehicles and were not wearing body cameras, according to the area’s congresswoman, Representative Sylvia Garcia, a Democrat. Ms. Garcia said she had spoken to the acting director of ICE, David Venturella.
If ICE agents are operating without body cams, it's worth asking why. Before she resigned as Homeland Security Secretary under pressure, Kristi Noem agreed to expedite body-cam purchases after the deaths of two people in Minneapolis during the ICE roundup in December and January. It also raises the possibility that ICE agents in Biddleford may not have been equipped with body cams in today's incident, assuming that the shooting actually involved ICE agents at all.
Newsweek has seen video of the aftermath in Biddleford, and it's not clear who was involved in the shooting:
A video circulating on Reddit which appears to show the aftermath of the Biddeford incident shows a white sedan stopped at an intersection near a Hill Street sign, surrounded by multiple law enforcement vehicles with emergency lights activated.
Several officers can be seen gathered around a person lying on the pavement beside the vehicle. Officers appear to be providing medical assistance, with a medical bag or equipment visible on the ground nearby.
Some individuals in the footage appear to be wearing tactical vests marked “Police” and “U.S. Marshal,” though the identities and affiliations of those officers could not be independently verified. The video does not independently establish the circumstances leading up to the incident or identify which agencies were involved.
Additional footage from the same scene shows ICE officers operating near a white pickup truck parked along a residential driveway while loud emergency sirens wail in the background.
Stay tuned for more developments. It's possible that the shooting involved ICE agents or that it may have involved partner agencies. Hopefully, we will get real details ahead of the speculative outrage that will come, whether justified or not.
Update: This is unconfirmed, but it would explain things if corroborated:
