As the Alan Parsons Project once asked … where do we go from here?

To call the outcome of the 2022 midterms a disappointment is to engage in understatement. Republicans had a unique political and economic environment, and squandered it. We should end up with what we needed — control of the House to block Joe Biden’s radical-progressive agenda and have standing in court to block his unconstitutional actions — but that was a bare minimum expectation.

This level of failure demands some accountability and very clear strategies to prevent another cycle of failure.

However, even before that, we need to follow through on this cycle. The Right has to focus on the runoff election in Georgia in order to get Herschel Walker into the Senate. Before Republicans start worrying about leadership elections, issue strategies, or even policies, we need to make sure that we get back to 50 seats.

As Duane Patterson reminded us in today’s VIP column, we barely salvaged the legislative filibuster in 2021-22 from a Chuck Schumer nuclear option. Mitch McConnell successfully kept Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema together to block Schumer’s multiple attempts to eliminate the filibuster. If Schumer gets 51 votes, how long will it take to isolate one of the two?
