"I don't know what they have to hide": House Republicans denied access to DEA facility on border

Not only hasn’t Kamala Harris made it to the border, but the White House wants to make sure no one else in Washington does either. A delegation of House Republicans, including Appropriations Committee member Mike Garcia, ventured down to the DEA intelligence facility near El Paso to get a closer look at the border crisis. Instead, as Fox’s Sara Carter reported last night, they got a closer look at the stonewall Joe Biden’s erecting around his border policy:

“All I can say is, I don’t know what they have to hide,” Rep. Brian Babin, R-Texas told Carter. “For some reason, we were not allowed in. I can only imagine what is it that they want to hide and not show the very representatives of the American people that have oversight over this facility that fund it and that authorize it. What don’t they want us to see?”

“This is not something we surprised them with,” Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Calif., argued. “We’ve been trying to get in there for a couple of weeks and it’s coming from the top. It’s Coming from the White House. They don’t want us to see what it is. You can make a conjecture about why they won’t let us in there. In my opinion, they have data they are gathering at this intelligence center which clearly indicates that our open borders are actually a more serious than the average American understands right now.”

Rep. Vicky Hartzler R-MO said the El Paso center serves as the “intelligence operation for this region.

” I would have liked to have the opportunity to visit with the FBI and the agents there to learn more about what the drug cartels are doing and what strategy we’re employing to stop them,” she said, “but we were denied that opportunity.”

This is the kind of strategy that House Republicans should have employed from the beginning of the border crisis, but this also shows its limits. Normally this kind of House delegation would draw at least some media coverage, especially in relation to a pressing public crisis like the migrant wave this year. However, Fox News appears to be the only news outlet covering the aborted visit by the House delegation.

I wonder how many media outlets would follow Kamala Harris on a border visit? Alas, we’ll likely never get an opportunity to find out … largely because that’s why Harris won’t go to the border. The White House doesn’t want media to focus on this disaster, and thus far the media has been oddly compliant despite early complaints about them being denied access to detention facilities. They still appear to be denied that access, but the media outlets have stopped complaining about it in recent weeks.

It’s very clear that the White House has something to hide on the border if they’re going as far as blocking congressional access to federal facilities. Perhaps the media might become a bit more curious about that, but it might take a few more aborted codels to pique their interest in border policy under a Democratic administration.
