Hillary memoir: If it weren't for that darned Bernie and Obama ...

And we thought that Hillary Clinton would offer us only the same old tired excuses for blowing the 2016 layup. Her memoir, What Happened, does go beyond blaming James Comey, the Russians, misogyny, and the Usual Suspects of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy. However, it still does not go so far as to admit that Hillary herself was the problem, at least not from the excerpts seen thus far. In this passage from the tome, Hillary lays the blame on Bernie Sanders for his attacks on her integrity — and in a later excerpt, on Barack Obama for keeping her quiet about it:

According to excerpts of Clinton’s new campaign tell-all book, “What Happened,” Clinton claims that she wanted to fight back against Sanders’s characterization of her as beholden to corporate influence but that former President Obama and others advised her to stay quiet.

“Throughout the primaries, every time I wanted to hit back against Bernie’s attacks, I was told to restrain myself,” Clinton writes. “Noting that his plans didn’t add up, that they would inevitably mean raising taxes on middle-class families, or that they were little more than a pipe-dream – all of this could be used to reinforce his argument that I wasn’t a true progressive. My team kept reminding me that we didn’t want to alienate Bernie’s supporters. President Obama urged me to grit my teeth and lay off Bernie as much as I could. I felt like I was in a straitjacket.”

Hillary has lodged accusations of sexism mainly against the Right. In this book, she includes the “Bernie Bros” among the misogynists:

“Some of his supporters, the so-called Bernie Bros, took to harassing my supporters online,” Clinton writes. “It got ugly and more than a little sexist.”

“When I finally challenged Bernie during a debate to name a single time I changed a position or a vote because of a financial contribution, he couldn’t come up with anything,” Clinton wrote. “Nonetheless, his attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump’s ‘Crooked Hillary’ campaign.”

That’s not a new allegation. As long as two years ago, Team Hillary complained publicly about Bernie’s supposed sexism for saying Hillary “shouted.” That didn’t impress Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough at the time, calling it “sad and pathetic.”

“I know sexism,” Mika said at the time. “Let’s not denigrate it with this stupidity.” They also semi-predicted the impact it would have on Donald Trump’s momentum:

It’s unclear if the book lodges the same sexist accusation explicitly on Obama, but from the excerpts provided here, it’s certainly the strong implication. The male party leaders pressured her into shutting up, Hillary claims, putting her in a “straitjacket” of submissiveness, apparently. Will Obama have anything to say to that?

That still leaves the question, however, of why Hillary would have cooperated with it. She didn’t mind going after Bernie in 2015 over his supposed sexism, which contradicts her claims here of being straitjacketed, and her team didn’t mind pushing that nonsense at least through March 2016 either. In that sense Hillary is certainly consistent, but what it fails to explain is why this supposedly glass-ceiling-shattering woman of power got so subservient as to cater to the misogynists in her own party rather than pursue her own interests. The likeliest explanation: Hillary still can’t admit she’s a terrible candidate, and is widening the Misogynistic Circle of Blame to cover for her denial.
