POTUS closer in Michigan: Move history in a better direction

True statement: “It isn’t often that you get a chance to move history in a better direction. Not so true statement: “This is one of those moments.” Barack Obama wrapped up the 2016 campaign with that pitch to Michigan voters, and perhaps he’s hoping that fact-checkers don’t have enough time to fact-check it:

This isn’t a better-direction election. It’s a least-worst direction, and it’s far from proven that the candidate who corrupted legitimate constitutional oversight while Secretary of State fulfills even that low bar. The only reason she’s in position to compete for the win at all is because Republicans nominated one of the few in their party whose unfavorables even come close to Hillary Clinton’s.

However, this prompts another question: why does Team Hillary have Obama making the final pitch in Michigan? This state usually provides Democrats with a comfortable margin, and one would expect the biggest surrogates to help out in places like Florida, North Carolina, and maybe Ohio. Hillary has led all along in Michigan, at least in RCP’s aggregation, and her average lead is 4.7 points. The only poll that showed Trump in the lead was in August … 2015 … and only in the head-to-head race. Team Hillary must be seeing something in private polling to send their biggest surrogate (outside of Bill Clinton) to a state that has never shown Trump leading. Whatever it is, FiveThirtyEight isn’t seeing it — the odds on a Trump win in Michigan are at 21%, and are declining over the last couple of days.

Right now, the national polls suggest that Hillary has a large enough lead that individual state polls don’t matter. Perhaps Democrats’ own polls show history moving in a better direction.
