Videos: Fires rage in NYC; 50 homes destroyed

We had a thread open on Hurricane Sandy’s impact on New Jersey and NYC last night, but this morning’s stories deserve a big update.  Overnight, the Rockaway Peninsula (Queens) went up in flames, with at least 50 homes destroyed before the gas could be turned off to the area.  WNBC captured this fearsome video:

At least 50 homes have been destroyed in the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens, where firefighters battled a six-alarm fire early Tuesday.

Fire officials say the fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Monday and is located in a flooded Zone A area.

President Obama has now declared NYC and Long Island federal disaster areas. The rest of us should be praying — for the people who live there, and especially for the brave men and women who are the first responders.
