Happy Mother's Day!

The staff at Hot Air would like to send our greetings to all of the mothers in our readership — and especially our own mothers — for Mother’s Day today, as well as our wives who provided such nurture and love to our own children.  I’d also like to include my DIL, who is the mother of my two grandchildren, and all of the daughters and daughters-in-law of our readers who have made many of you grandparents, too.  It has never been easy to be a parent, but these days it seems more difficult than ever before.  While we do the normal activities surrounding Mother’s Day, the brunches, flowers, cards, and gifts, we should take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by all of these women to provide the nurture and care needed to raise children, both in our own childhoods and those of today and tomorrow as well.

Feel free to add your thoughts in the comments section, but for now I’ll leave you with this sonnet from Christina Rosetti on mothers:

Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome
Has many sonnets: so here now shall be
One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me
To her whose heart is my heart’s quiet home,
To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee
I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome;
Whose service is my special dignity,
And she my loadstar while I go and come
And so because you love me, and because
I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath
Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name:
In you not fourscore years can dim the flame
Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws
Of time and change and mortal life and death.
