Obamateurism of the Day

Yesterday we had some fun with Barack Obama’s answer to a Minneapolis CBS affiliate’s question as to whether Americans are better off than they were four years ago. Obama told WCCO that Americans were better off than they would have been without his policies:

However, almost exactly a month ago George Stephanopoulos asked him the same question for ABC — and this time, Obama said, well, no:

“Well I don’t think they are better off than they were four years ago. They’re not better off than they were before Lehman’s collapse, before the financial crisis, before this extraordinary recession that we’re going through.”

That’s a disingenuous answer anyway. Stephanopoulos clearly meant that the question would be asked at election time in November 2012 and wanted to hear Obama’s answer, which should still be no … because we aren’t. Note that both Stephanopoulos and the WCCO reporter framed the question with the exact same time frame — four years. Obama should have stuck to that answer his first answer this week, too.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
