Because that strategy worked so well in November … right? DNC chair Tim Kaine seems to forget that Democrats refused to take action on the tax rates while Congress was in session in September so that they could frame the Republicans as the party of the rich fat cats who care nothing for the middle class. As it turns out, though, the voters seemed a lot less interested in class warfare after electing Barack Obama in 2008 and seeing how well that worked out, for everyone. Greg Hengler has the video from Kaine’s dialogue with CBS host Harry Smith this morning:
Can you hear Republicans saying Please, please throw us in the tax rate briar patch, Mr. President! If Kaine really thinks a rerun of 2010 is brilliant strategy, then it explains a lot about the Democratic losses in this cycle. I doubt he does, though; Kaine’s just trying to spin this retreat as some sort of counterintuitive victory in order to reduce the heat on Obama from the Left. Had Obama thought to do the same thing at his press conference, this kind of Chip Diller moment wouldn’t have been necessary.
Be sure to watch the whole video; the strategery argument comes near the end. Kaine starts by predicting that Democrats will fall into line on the tax deal, which sounds like a better prediction than the one he uses as his finish.
