Most of the Wikileaks data has proven to be titillating gossip rather than revelatory exposé, but it does expose one fact: the Obama diplomatic effort has been an embarrassment.  It started with the “reset” button fiasco with Russia, and as the Wikileaks documents show, continue with insulting attempts to strongarm allies to take Gitmo prisoners.  Barack Obama came to office promising to restore damaged relations with allies and to use “smart power” with our competitors and enemies.  Instead, we’ve seen two full years of utter impotence, which became clear when Russia reneged on sanctions against Iran after Obama gave up missile defense in eastern Europe — and continues apace today.
