Democrats have spent the last two years claiming that massive spending would solve our economic woes, that Cash for Clunkers would somehow amplify car demand in the long term, that two successive tax credits on home sales would reverse the downward spiral in the housing market, and that we would ride the waves of “Recovery Summer” to massive, 500K+ per month job growth by the fall. Democrats also told themselves that passing ObamaCare would mean an outpouring of support in the midterms. And Barack Obama keeps assuring us that we are moving in the right direction, even though more people join the ranks of the unemployed and underemployed each month and economists now believe we have at least a year before any significant economic growth.
But don’t worry, Obama says, because Democrats are actually pessimists (via Hanna B):
President Obama returned Wednesday night to his get-off-your-duffs message, warning Democrats at a low-key million-dollar fundraising dinner against “sulking and sitting back.”
“One of the strengths of Democrats is that we don’t march lockstep. We like to have internal arguments and we’re very self-critical. We tend to look at the glass as half-empty. And that makes us better,” he said to a dining room filled with donors. “But that’s also a weakness, particularly four weeks before an election.”
Maybe they lost the other half while trying to blow sunshine up everyone’s skirts.
