From the Too Weird to Check files: William Shatner wants to be Prime Minister of Canada. The star of Star Trek has reportedly set his sights on a place where many men have gone before, only they usually got there through years of political career-building. But was he serious?
The 77-year-old star said: “My intention is to be Prime Minister of Canada, not Governor General, which is mainly a ceremonial position.”
Shatner revealed his lofty ambition in response to a letter from a fan who urged him to put himself forward for the Governor General of Canada. …
In his letter, Shatner regretfully added: “I must, with my deepest thanks, turn down your honourable intent to advance me as Governor General. Besides which, I don’t have time to be Governor General.” Despite his busy schedule, the actor is confident he has what it takes to run the country, explaining: “As Prime Minister I can lead Canada into even greater exploits.”
Such an effort might provide a bit of fun. Who would Shatner name for his cabinet, given the chance? And who would write his lines? Jack Layton?
Alas, this sounds like a joke from Shatner, teasing the fan who suggested he take the largely-ceremonial position of Governor General. He wouldn’t accept that, anyway. He learned in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan never to give up command for a desk job. (via The Corner)
