Roe anniversary: Pence introduces bill to end PP funding

Mike Pence has launched what will surely be a quixotic campaign to strip Planned Parenthood of its funding.  Pence announced today, on the anniversary of Roe v Wade, that he will press Congress to act against the big-box abortion provider by stopping the millions of dollars it receives each year from the federal government.  After HR 614’s introduction yesterday, it has already gained 61 co-sponsors:

U.S. Congressman Mike Pence gave the following speech from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Congressman Pence also will speak to thousands of pro-life Americans at the March for Life later today.

“Today millions of Americans—from the National Mall to prayer services in small town churches—will mark the sad 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the worst Supreme Court decision since Dred Scott.

“As most Americans know, it is simply morally wrong to end an unborn human life by abortion. But it is also morally wrong to take the taxpayer dollars of millions of pro-life Americans and use them to promote abortion at home or abroad.

“Many Americans fail to recognize the largest abortion provider in America is also the largest recipient of federal taxpayer dollars through Title X—this should not be.

“Yesterday, with more than 60 cosponsors, I re-introduced the ‘Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act,’ a bill that would deny any federal funding to Planned Parenthood of America.

“On this dark anniversary, let us rededicate ourselves to protecting the unborn and to protecting taxpayers on matters of conscience.”

How likely will passage be for HR 614?  It would take a miracle, but it might provide some pushback against the Freedom of Choice Act, expected to get a vote in this session.  A coordinated effort to shine a light on the abuses of Planned Parenthood would focus more criticism on FOCA and might even result in at least a reduction of the subsidies received by PP.

Which abuses?  We’ve covered them at length, but chief among them would be the obstruction of justice and lawbreaking at clinics in covering up rape and the sexual abuse of minors.  That alone should have caused Congress to end its subsidies of the abortion retailer.  Thankfully, Pence and his co-sponsors have not decided to let this slip through the cracks, even in a Congress dominated by Democrats in both chambers.

Update: Hope and Change?  Obama postpones the cancellation of the Mexico City policy:

In a move to downplay his pro-abortion agenda, President Barack Obama has decided to wait a little longer to reverse a Bush policy preventing taxpayer funding of abortions overseas. The Mexico City Policy prevents sending public funds to groups that perform or promote abortions in other countries.

The new president could either issue an order tomorrow or in the near future to reverse the policy or allow Congress to do it.

Obama was expected to overturn the pro-life policy on his first or second full days in office and to possibly do so today, on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.

However, a CBN News report indicates Obama will not overturn the policy on a day that pro-life advocates mourn the Supreme Court allowing virtually unlimited abortions.

Obama may shove this off to Congress and hope to avoid the issue altogether.
