Scratch Hillary from the Veep list

CNN reports that Hillary Clinton will give the keynote speech for the second night of the Democratic Convention in Denver.  Calling it “Hillary Night”, the DNCC will put all of the female Senators on stage with Hillary and honor her efforts — but the timing reveals that she will not serve as Barack Obama’s running mate:

Sen. Hillary Clinton has agreed to speak on the second night of next month’s Democratic convention, headlining on the 88th anniversary of the day women earned the right to vote, sources say.

Two sources close to Clinton said the former presidential candidate will speak August 26 with all female U.S. senators on stage with her.

The timing will also highlight the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted suffrage to women after 144 years of second-class status.  That puts a nice gloss on the fact that Hillary will not deliver her address on Wednesday night, the position in which the nominee for Vice President usually gives the acceptance speech.  Hillary’s agreement to the second-day keynote speech indicates that she has given up on pushing to be Obama’s running mate, or at least that Bill has.

Has this factored into the thinking of Democrats already, given the many hints that Hillary would not be Obama’s running mate?  Or will this push the PUMAs out of the coalition altogether and have them taking a look at John McCain or simply staying home?  The celebration of the suffrage movement is obviously intended to mollify them, but won’t that reinforce their belief that Hillary got victimized by blatant sexism this year?
