'Diversity' Is Not Our Strength if They Hate Us

One of the most idiotic arguments we hear from liberals about immigration is that "diversity is our strength."

That is a nonsense statement, backed by zero evidence. In fact, if you read the social science on the issue of diversity and social trust, the opposite is true.

Diversity may bring some benefits, surely, but strengthening social bonds is absolutely not one of them. In fact, enormous amounts of effort must be expended to tamp down social conflicts that stem from in-group preferences, whether it is race or religion, regional preferences, or any number of other potential dividing lines that develop within society.

Northerners disdain Southerners. Some whites disdain non-whites, and any poll will show you that blacks as a group distrust whites, and an entire genre of politics that now dominates the Democratic Party is bashing whites. Prejudices about others, and concerns about strangers are as old as time. Liberal societies are constantly dealing with this problem, and the contrast between the social peace Scandinavians enjoyed before the mass settling of refugees and the social discord in their countries now is a stark example of how increasing diversity of population groups is a recipe for social discord.

Look at the UK, and ask the Welsh or Scots about the English. Ask Catholic Irishmen what they think of the Protestants. Ask either group about what they think about the English.

Ask Humza Yousaf about what he thinks about whites, and the man was the most powerful Scottish politician for a while.

America has been, to a great extent, pretty good about managing the diversity within our great country, but nobody can say it has been easy. Every mass immigration wave has been followed by a backlash, and in general terms most immigrants prior to the current generation have desperately wanted to assimilate quickly.

But now we have a new type of immigrant to contend with: the America haters.

In Minnesota, we have quite a few, the Somali population being most prominent among them. They have stubbornly refused to assimilate, although they have been quite savvy about acquiring power and using it to generate ill-gotten wealth through government fraud.

Ilhan Omar, who is my Congresswoman, often attacks America as an awful country, and regularly tells her Somali countrymen that she represents them, is loyal to Somalia first, and that she wants to remake our country in her image.

Islamic immigrants as a whole are quite open about their desire to remake America into a Muslim country under Sharia law, and many Islamic leaders will preach to their following about the strategy to do so, including the use of force when the Muslim population grows strong enough.

It's not just extremists on the fringes who say such things. There are always fringe figures, and it is unfair to tar with too broad a brush based on the rantings of a few. It's quite common to express these ideas from the most prestigious American institutions. Professors will explain to you the plan, and make it clear that liberal democracy is a cancer that must be excised from the world.

Muslim migrants in Western countries refuse to integrate for a simple reason: they believe our culture is weak and corrupt and Islam and Islamic law will reign supreme. That belief is fundamental to the religion. It's how they conquered North Africa and most of South Asia, and why they tried mightily to conquer Christendom

Turkey used to be Greek and was the center of the Greek Orthodox church. The Turks invaded from the East and kicked them out. The Ottoman Empire was built on Islam, which is why the various "countries" that now make up the Middle East didn't exist until the empire fell. Islam is supposed to unite the world under one banner.

Obviously, there are individual Muslims who are happy to integrate into Western societies, but they are an exception, because Islam is a totalitarian religion, meaning that there is no line between politics and religion. It is all one thing; if you are Muslim, by definition you want a version of Sharia law, which is incompatible with our conception of human rights.

Millions of Westerners desperately want to believe that none of this is true. There is no difference between an Irishman or an Italian immigrating to the United States and a Muslim from Afghanistan, Pakistan, or "Palestine."

That is willful blindness.

We've spent so much effort tamping down the natural, and often harmful, at least in a liberal society, impulse to distrust the "other" that we turn on ourselves whenever we rightly feel it.

"That's racism." "That's Islamophobic."

Not if the fear is based on rational considerations. That's just coming to terms with reality. Rejecting Islamism is no more "prejudiced" than rejecting Nazism or Communism, or any other totalitarian ideology. And I am sorry to say that totalitarianism is inherent to the religion.
