One of the most frustrating things about covering, or just paying attention to politics, is the fact that many people are willing to just lie.

One expects people to "spin" in politics, or even just in everyday life. It's so expected that in marketing it's called "puffery," and marketers can't be sued for making statements that any normal person should know are subjective and not entirely reliable.

We don't expect a politician to expose weaknesses in his argument or to disclose potentially problematic information, but we have every right to expect that things they say are not outright lies. For instance, when Tim Walz repeatedly said he served in Afghanistan—service from which he supposedly suffered PTSD—he wasn't puffing up his military service.

He was lying.

Now, many times before he had implied such service, which rode the line between puffery and outright lying. But as he started running for higher office, he turned his service in Italy during the Afghanistan War into a traumatic front-line tour that gave him PTSD.

Amy Klobuchar, the senior senator from Minnesota, is now running for governor, and she is pulling the same trick on any number of issues, the latest of which is her endorsement from Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood makes much of the fact that it REFERS women to doctors who can perform mammograms, implying that they do so while they do not, in fact, perform them. Klobuchar, who wants to avoid acknowledging the fact that her support for late-term abortions is the reason why Planned Parenthood is endorsing her, outright says that they support them and are the only source for some women to get them.

That is a lie.

We have every right to expect that politicians do not lie, and that media folks who catch them at it call them out. Unfortunately, that line gets crossed every day now. Politicians know they can do it without consequence because the media runs cover for them if they like them, and, as we have seen many times over the years, they will even create hoaxes to get politicians whom they don't like.

It's that latter fact that is particularly scary.
